What Size Duvet Cover Do I Need? A Simple Size Guide
Bedding sizes can be confusing. Different brands use different names, and the same "queen" can fit very differently from one store to the next. The good news is that choosing the right size only takes a minute once you know how the sizes work.
Here's how our sizes are measured, why we often recommend sizing up, and how to choose a duvet insert to match.
The short answer: choose the size that matches your bed for a neat, tailored fit. For a longer drape over the sides of the bed, size up one. Most of our North American customers prefer sizing up.
How our sizes work
Our duvet cover sets follow global sizing standards, where sets are named by the width of the bed they fit, in metres. You may see a size listed either way, and both names mean the same set:
| Size name | Also listed as | Fits |
|---|---|---|
| Single/Twin | 1.2m | Single and twin beds |
| Double/Full | 1.5m | Double and full beds |
| Queen | 1.8m | Queen beds |
| King | 2.0m | King beds |
Not every set comes in every size. Some start at Double/Full, so check the size options on the product page.
Why we recommend sizing up
Global sizing is designed for a close, tidy fit. North American mattresses tend to be deeper, and many people add a mattress topper on top of that, so a true-to-size duvet can sit closer to the edge of the bed than you might expect.
Sizing up one gives you:
- A fuller drape. The duvet falls further down the sides of the bed and covers the edge of the mattress.
- More room to share. A wider duvet means less pulling the covers back and forth at night.
- A more relaxed, layered look. Extra length and width is what makes a bed look full and styled in photos.
Quick size chart
| Your bed | True to size | For a fuller drape |
|---|---|---|
| Twin | Single/Twin | Double/Full |
| Full / Double | Double/Full | Queen |
| Queen | Queen | King |
| King | King | King (our largest size) |
When to stay true to size
Sizing up isn't right for every bed. Stay with your bed size if:
- You prefer a neat, tailored look with the duvet sitting at the edge of the mattress.
- Your bed is pushed against a wall, or it's a daybed, where extra width just bunches up.
- Your mattress is thin or low profile.
- Your set includes a bed skirt. The Royal Ruched Duvet Cover Set comes with a ruffled bed skirt, which fits around the mattress, so choose the size of your actual bed.
Matching your duvet insert
Your duvet insert should be the same size as your duvet cover. If the insert is smaller, it slides around and leaves empty corners. If it's bigger, it bunches up inside.
So if you size up your cover, size up your insert too. A queen bed with a king duvet cover needs a king insert. Our Organic Soybean Fiber Duvet Insert comes in every size and three warmth levels, and it's 20% off when you add it to any duvet cover set with Bundle & Save.
What about the flat sheet?
Every set includes a flat sheet sized to match. Sizing up gives you a little more sheet to tuck in at the sides and foot of the bed, which helps it stay in place through the night.
How to measure your bed
- Measure the width of your mattress from side to side.
- Measure the length from head to foot.
- Measure the depth from the bottom of the mattress to the top, including any topper.
Then compare your numbers with the duvet cover measurements in the size guide on each product page. As a general rule, a duvet should be at least as wide as your mattress plus twice its depth if you want it to cover the sides.
Common questions
Will a bigger duvet cover look messy?
Not if the insert matches. A king cover over a king insert on a queen bed looks full and intentional. It only looks loose when the insert is smaller than the cover.
What size should I choose for a guest room?
True to size is usually best for guest rooms, since they're often smaller and the bed is more likely to sit against a wall.
Can I exchange if the size is wrong?
Returns are accepted within 30 days of delivery for unused, unwashed items with tags attached, so it's worth checking your size before you order. If you're unsure, email us at hello@dormestudio.com with your mattress size and we'll help you choose.
